What Paperwork You Need to Junk a Car in Florida
To junk a car in Florida you mainly need the Certificate of Title signed over to the buyer, plus a valid photo ID. If the title is lost you can use a duplicate, a derelict motor vehicle certificate, or another legal path. Have any lien released, keep your license plate, and file a Notice of Sale so the car is off your name.

What you actually need to junk a car in Florida
Junking a car in Florida comes down to proving two things: that the vehicle is yours and that nobody else has a claim on it. Get those squared away and the rest is quick. Here is the short list, then the detail on each.
- Certificate of Title, or a legal alternative if the title is lost
- A valid photo ID that matches the name on the title
- Your current registration (helpful, not always required)
- A lien release, if the car was ever financed
- An odometer reading for newer vehicles
- Your license plate, which you keep and handle separately
The title is the main document
The Florida Certificate of Title is what transfers ownership. To hand your car over, you sign the "transfer of title by seller" section on the back and fill in the buyer, the date, and the odometer reading. That signature is what legally moves the car off your name.
If you have the title
Make sure it is the actual title, not a registration or an old bill of sale. If your title is electronic, held by the state after a loan payoff, you can request a paper copy or have the buyer help you print one at a tax collector office. Never sign the title before you know who the buyer is.
If you do not have the title
A missing title is not a dead end. You have a few routes:
- Apply for a duplicate with form HSMV 82101 and the duplicate fee at a motor vehicle service center.
- If the car is truly derelict, meaning worth under $1,000 and 10 or more model years old, a buyer can use the Application for Derelict Motor Vehicle Certificate, form HSMV 82137, to scrap it.
- If the registered owner passed away or the car reached you another way, Florida Statute 319.28 covers transfer without the original title.
We break the no title path down further in our guide on selling a junk car without a title in Florida, and the scrap only route in the Florida derelict vehicle certificate guide.
The supporting paperwork
Photo ID
Bring a valid Florida driver license or ID card, and make sure the name matches the seller listed on the title. Out of state IDs are accepted for the derelict certificate process.
Registration
Your registration is not strictly required to junk a car, but it helps confirm the plate and the VIN. If you still have it, keep it handy for the pickup.
Lien release
If the car was ever financed, the state may still show a lien on file, and you cannot sign a clean title until it is cleared. Ask your old lender for a lien satisfaction letter, or confirm the electronic lien was released when you paid the loan off. Our guide on selling a car with a lien in Florida walks through the steps.
Odometer disclosure
Federal rules require a mileage reading at sale for vehicles model year 2011 and newer, for 20 years from the model year. Older cars are generally exempt. The reading goes right on the title or on form HSMV 82050.
Your plate and your notice of sale
In Florida the license plate belongs to you, not the car. Take it off before the car leaves. You can transfer it to another vehicle or surrender it to a county tax collector. Then file a Notice of Sale, form HSMV 82050, within 30 days so the vehicle is no longer tied to your name, and cancel the registration and insurance so you stop paying on a car you no longer own.
What a licensed buyer handles for you
A licensed, insured buyer does the heavy lifting: checking your paperwork, completing the title transfer or the derelict application, filing the Notice of Sale, and towing the car for free. You keep your plate and your ID, and you walk away with cash. That is how we run every same day pickup across Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando, and Polk counties.
